CD117, c-kit, is a tyrosine kinase receptor found on interstitial cells of Cajal, germ cells, bone marrow stem cells, melanocytes, breast epithelium, and mast cells. This receptor is found on a wide variety of tumor cells including follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma, adenocarcinomas from endometrium, lung, ovary, pancreas, and breast as well as malignant melanoma, endodermal sinus tumor, small cell carcinoma, and angiosarcomas. However, anti-CD117 has been particularly useful in differentiating gastrointestinal stromal tumors from tumors of smooth muscle origin, fibromatosis, Kaposi’s sarcoma and neural tumors of the GI tract. Anti-CD117 is also useful in recognizing myeloblasts in a bone marrow biopsy and clot section.
